Incessantly heavy rainfall lashed multiple parts of Kerala on Wednesday night, prompting authorities to declare holidays in educational institutions across the state on Thursday.
Professional colleges and schools have been shut in Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Wayanad, Ernakulam, Kottayam, and Alappuzha districts and in the Iriti taluk of Kannur district.
Meanwhile, owing to severe downpours, an orange alert has been issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in seven districts, and a yellow alert in the remaining districts in the state on Thursday.
Heavy rainfall was accompanied by intense wind speed of 40 Kmph (in gusts) in many places at Kannur, and Kasaragod districts, the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority said on Thursday.
Arrangements for relief camps have been made in Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha districts to accommodate people affected by rain-induced floods.
Heavy rains have also caused damage of billboards, sheet roofs of houses and institutions, and water tanks fell on the ground in lower areas of Kottayam district and the Kumarakom area.
Meanwhile, heavy rainfall in Delhi since today morning also brought huge relief for the city residents from continuous scorching heat. The rainy condition made the weather pleasant as it brought down the maximum temperature to a few degrees.
The weather body has predicted moderate to heavy rainfall in the national capital throughout the day today. Additionally, monsoon is likely to enter most states of North India in the first week of July.
